Greetings fellow librarians
from the staff and volunteers of Lee Memorial Health System Libraries:
My name is Anne Campbell and
I chair a children’s reading program “READING
at Health Park Medical Center. This
program is provided by the Health Park Medical Library and consists totally of
volunteers. We go onto wards where children are in admittance and into
individual rooms of these children; here we offer to read to the children, make
it possible for parent(s) to get a break and in some cases when a child does
not want to be read to, we just talk and visit with them if we are permitted.
One thing we always do and that is, leave an age appropriate book with that
child. We allow the child to choose a book and if there are any siblings,
juvenile visitors, parents, etc., they may also choose a book; these books,
once they are stamped, belong to the child and we do not take them back to be
re-gifted due to health concerns.   Any
child who comes to Health Park and their parent(s) are invited to come to the
library and choose a book to take home with them.
We have between 300 and 400
children’s books in our library and are continually getting additional books
given to us thru donations, fundraisers and funds to purchase new books. And we need help. This is an
invitation to anyone who can devote 3 or 4 hours each week to come volunteer
with us. If you have any interest or know of anyone who would be interested,
please have them contact me at 239-220-9990,, or thru the Health Park Medical Library 239-343-6367.
You will need to become a
volunteer through Volunteer Services and be assigned to the library as a
volunteer for the reading program. You will then be trained by me or someone I
designate, and given a special apron designed to be worn when engaging in the
service.  Both women and men are
encouraged to volunteer.
Thank you; and if you simply
want to know more about the program, please do not hesitate to contact me.
With sincerest appreciation,

Anne Campbell
